The Customer Request Type Select Field works together with the Service Desk Issue Type and the configuration of the portal of the Service Desk.

You can create and edit the request types that customers will fill out on the customer portal in Settings > Request types:
These request types are related to an issue type. In this example for instance we can see these relationships:
